Adrian Vandenberg and my son Adrian. Adrian V. and Rudy Sarzo were doing a promo thing at a local guitar store. Thanks to Tim Hubbard for this shot!
Did you ever fall in love with a name, just the name, just because? I did. At some point in the early 1980s I was watching MTV, back when it was music television, and on came an interview clip in which guitaristAdrian Vandenberg’s name popped up under his talking head. I’m thinking it was 1982-83, so it may have been for the bandVandenbergand notWhitesnake…I’m not sure and I haven’t been able to find the clip.
Either way, the name immediately caught my attention – I thought it was the coolest guy name I’d ever heard. I decided then and there, on the spot, that I was going to name any future son of mine Adrian.
Fast-forward to 1989 and my one and only child, a son, was born, and still being obsessed with the moniker, he was named Adrian.
Adrian had a good friend in high school also named Adrian, a nice kid who emigrated from Bosnia as a toddler. I asked the other Adrian if there was any story behind his name, and was told that his mom named him after the Adriatic Sea…very cool. I told him to tell his mom that my Adrian was named after a musician in an ’80s band. Ha!
Haha! Even though I’m a proud parent. Check out @rockerchicksrule for cool stuff.
Fast-forward another 29 years and my kid, well-schooled in and raised on classic rock and metal, prefers to listen to a variety of music genres: EDM (both the mellow kind and throbbing-I-want-to-claw-my-eyes-out-kind…I have detected a difference in my minimal exposure), older rap, pop (all decades he says), disco (!), smooth jazz (wha?), and country (who’d have thunk). I’ll mention that I’m convinced his general conservatism is his rebellion. But he knows his classic rock artists well – he recently sent me a LOL text and photo showing Sammy Hagar’s I Can’t Drive 55 on the satellite radio screen and said his fiancée always thought that was Journey. We decided to give her points for getting the era right ;o).
Anyhow, Adrian’s dad worked with music magazines when he was a youngster, and we all started collecting autographs for him. And that’s the long story as to why most of the autographs below are made out to Adrian.
Kinda cool they came around in 1990 and I was able to get my Adrian hooked up with his namesake. Not remembering much about this one, but I know there was an interview with him in the magazine.I remember this was from the 1989 TRASH album. Alice did a tour promo where fans helped clean up the community – we helped pick up “trash” at a local beach. Adrian was there in his stroller!1990 – Very early Alice in Chains. If I recall correctly, this was their first magazine cover.Bang Tango opened for Ratt 1990-91 ish.I don’t remember anything about this band…Awesome autograph.Legendary. Best known for being Johnny Carson’s bandleader on The Tonight Show.I remember we got this one at Foundations Forum, a long-lost heavy metal music industry convention that happened for a few years in the late 1980s/early ’90s.Fun band, nice guys. I saw that they were touring several years ago but couldn’t go…would love to see them again.Note the name cutout – that’s from the old school days of literal cut-and-paste newsprinting techniques. Some of my pals have some cool pics of spending the day with these guys at Disney World the day after this show in Tampa.I remember a magazine fan won a free concert with the band – it ended up taking place at an apartment complex clubhouse in Clearwater.Florida guys.Looking forward to seeing these guys on the next Monsters of Rock Cruise (2019)!Another legendary autograph. The only thing I remember about this band is that the singer preferred to be homeless and didn’t shower. Whether that’s true or I’m remembering it right is a good question. Another autograph from Foundations Forum. These guys happened to play at a local club on the same day as my Adrian’s 1st birthday party, and they stopped by for a visit and took a picture with the lad. Wonder what’s become of them…?Is Adrian trying to drink beer, or is that a bottle? I promise he didn’t drink beer!I love this band’s self-titled debut album. Not remembering much about this band…I wonder whatever happened to these guys…Probably one of my favorite autographs – gotta love the Flea art.Sammy is one of my favorite singers EVER. Love the karma stuff. Loved loved loved the Marching to Mars album. Check out my post The Chronicles of a Van Halen and Sammy Hagar Fan 1979-2017. (Yes, these autographs are outside the time zone of the rest of them but I decided to include them anyhow ;o)).Loved their self-titled debut album, too.A band still going strong.I don’t remember anything about this guy either.Looks like they opened for the Scorpions…thank goodness I have all these hints because I’d never remember this stuff. I don’t know how Eddie Trunk does it.Another rejuvenated band! Love seeing them on the Monsters of Rock Cruise now and again. The very first issue of Thrust Magazine – Florida boys that went to LA and made it big.Not remembering much.Another cool band that pops up every so often on the Monsters of Rock Cruise.
Thank you! I think I’ll just hold on to them all for now, but thank you for asking ;o) I hope to donate all this stuff to a local music scene museum if that ever gets off the ground.
These autographs are awesome. Do you have any interest in selling the Alice In Chains one?
Thanks!
